Resources and Support
Client Assistance
HOPE Cancer Help Centre provides emotional, physical, and, when necessary, financial support to individuals facing any type of cancer. Social Workers from the Saskatoon Cancer Centre, St. Paul’s, City Hospital, the Royal University Hospital, and doctors in the community contact HOPE requesting help for their clients living with cancer who are in need of some financial assistance and cannot get help from other social agencies. All requests must come through one of these sources, as it requires a financial needs screening. Individuals cannot contact HOPE directly with a request for this type of assistance.
The following are examples of client assistance:
- Medication to soothe the pain of radiation burn for an individual unable to afford the cost of the drug.
- Freezing of sperm for young men about to undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatment.
- Assistance of food certificates to families with children living with cancer.
- Helping those undergoing treatment with yard work and housework.
- Assisting with distant transportation to and from treatment.
- Helping those in palliative care find comfort during their last days.
- Provision of telephone services while in palliative care or in-hospital cancer treatment to help people keep in touch with friends and family.
- Assistance with wigs and prosthesis—breast cancer, laryngectomee.
- Out-of-town clients needing in-town accommodation and in-town clients needing out-of-town accommodations.
- Assistance with the cost of medical consultations/tests/treatments not available locally.
